Philanthropy Philosophy

I enjoy planning my Intelligent Capitalworks Foundation directed annual gifts. For me, it’s like planning an exciting trip that I look forward to each year. Family vacations and philanthropy were not affordable activities for my family when I was growing up, so both of these activities are now rewarding parts of my adult life.

When I look out in the world, I want to help with many things.  It’s a bit overwhelming to me. Sometimes I feel like I’m trying to eat an elephant in one bite and need to remind myself that the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. So, my philosophy is do good when and where I can and enjoy the journey.

Philanthropy Philosophy

I also like planning my Intelligent Capitalworks Foundation directed annual gifts. For me, it’s a lot like shopping for gifts for other people and I enjoy thoughtfully shopping for gifts that will bring people joy. I’ve always felt more comfortable and happy giving gifts than receiving them, but I do enjoy receiving them and I know my charitable giving is received with gratitude.

When I look out in the world, I also want to help with many things and like everything else in my life, I need to set priorities and make choices. So far, I have been guided more by feelings each year than a formal decision-making framework. I enjoy responding to the fresh new feelings of concern and desire that come with each new year.

Philanthropy Philosophy

I grew up hearing my family’s origin stories and have some of my own. I greatly admire one of my brothers who  suffered a devastating childhood accident and lives with severe lifetime disabilities. Because of my family and career path, I have been exposed to philanthropy and well educated about it as a professional from an early age.

My nature is meaningful participation. I am fortunate to work on the board of directors with the talented, caring and committed board members of Help In Healing Home, a residential hospitality housing community for organ transplant and oncology treatment patients and their caregivers at The Village at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. My annual giving is guided by my experiences each year.

Philanthropy Philosophy

I come from a family that served our country and that tradition continues. My father served in Viet Nam, my brother served in Desert Storm and our son commissioned from the United States Naval Academy. I didn’t know what philanthropy per se was growing up, but I did know that we gave. My father gave all and of course that created significant hardship for my mom and us.

When I look out into the world, like most everyone else, I see a lot of needs, not wants. The prism of my philanthropy sees people suffering or coming up short. I now enjoy opportunities to help others in weekly and immediate ways. It allows me to keep my philanthropic spirit always at my side.

Philanthropy Philosophy

I was blessed to experience a childhood and young adulthood of continual philanthropy through my church and my journey to Eagle Scout, but at the time I had never heard the word philanthropy. The words were helping others, serving, service projects and a two-year church mission in Seoul, Korea. Now in my professional life, it’s turned into a four-syllable word, six syllables if you start saying eleemosynary. I just prefer service.

I am fortunate to work on the board of directors with the talented, caring and committed board members of Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central and Northern Arizona, a residential hospitality housing community dedicated to supporting families with sick children in their time of need. My annual giving is guided by my experiences each year.

Philanthropy Philosophy

I come from a family that on one side was very well settled and positioned in American life juxtaposed with the other side of first-generation Italian immigrants. It was pretty interesting, but it was also pretty confusing. One side of my origin family were the donors, the other side were the donees. One side of my family didn’t appear to struggle. For the other side, it was nothing but struggles. I didn’t like it at the time, but I’ve been blessed with greater opportunities to see from wider perspectives.

My lifetime philanthropy has allowed me the opportunity to observe, engage, participate and help shape some outcomes. I may be fortunate to consider a longer duration initiative that involves my children. My framework will continue to be to help make up shortfalls for people who are making the effort and have skin in the game.

Intelligent Capitalworks Philanthropy

Intelligent Capitalworks philanthropy efforts support and promote the contributions of our time, talent and treasure to improve the welfare of others at home, abroad and in the communities where we live and work.  As a partial reflection of this, our firm contributes annually to the Intelligent Capitalworks Charitable Fund at a donor-advised fund and also matches annual financial capital contributions of our current employees to the fund. Collectively, we provide grants to qualifying nonprofit organizations to help them achieve their goals.

Our philanthropy efforts also support contributions of our wealth management professionals’ time and talent by providing paid time off to support their volunteer commitments and inspire their philanthropic citizenship.
